Affirmations for Mamas & Papas

There are few life experiences that compare to those first few days after coming home from the hospital with a newborn (or two…) . Elation, relief, so much “newness”. For most this is accompanied by worry, anxiety, and sleep deprivation. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, this wide array of feelings is often synonymous with the postpartum period. While incomparably special, this time brings out a rawness that is hard to prepare for.

When we first brought home our boys, I was managing postpartum preeclampsia and anxiety, while learning to be a first time parent of newborn twins. The anxiety and stress I felt around sleep, breastfeeding, schedules, and constant new information was so immense, to say the least. It affected my mood, relationships, and most significantly my ability to be present. That, along with the shift in hormones made me feel like I had lost control and lost connection with myself.

Affirmations were a small but mighty tool that helped me pull my way out of dark moments. Why? They required only a moment of time, little effort, and made a difference in my moment to moment ability to cope with the intensity of this period. 1 year later and affirmations are an even bigger part of my daily self care and energy management.

While my twins are now officially in the toddler stage (14 months), there is still so much newness. We made it out of the first year alive, but that doesn’t mean the overstimulation, worry, and depletion aren’t there- it’s just a little bit different. Each day I lean more and more into this new role, but I still struggle. These simple phrases have helped to keep me grounded.

Affirmations are a powerful tool to help us to tap into our energy, and shift our mood. In essence, affirmations are a tool that places the control back in our hands. We know that much of the stress of parenting is learning to release control and go with the flow, and affirmations can help us get there.

The way we speak inside matters. We speak in hushed, loving, patient voices to our babies, so why not ourselves? In this time of giving, we also need to receive.
